Breathing New Life into a Worcester Landmark: Our Work on the Old Fire Station

At Underwoods Steel Stockholders & Fabrications, we take pride in contributing to projects that balance heritage with innovation. One of our most exciting recent involvements was the Old Fire Station redevelopment in Worcester, a scheme that has now been recognised with a RIBA West Midlands Award 2025 .

A Building with History

Built in 1938, the Old Fire Station is a much-loved local landmark. Following a sensitive and ambitious redevelopment by KKE Architects Ltd for Guthrie Roberts Ltd , the building has been transformed into 28 modern apartments with ground-floor retail spaces in the former fire-engine bays. The project exemplifies how historic structures can be adapted to meet today’s living standards while preserving their character and civic presence.

Our Contribution

Our Fabrication department were tasked with delivering critical elements of the structural and architectural steelwork. Our team worked closely with the design and engineering partners to ensure accuracy, durability, and seamless integration with both the original building fabric and the new interventions.

Roof Structure

One of the most technically challenging aspects of the project was the roof detailing. We fabricated and installed the bespoke steel elements required to support:

New roof-space insertions, including access walkways and extensions to stairways.
A transformed courtyard canopy, now serving as a shared terrace and garden for residents.

Internal Staircase

Another highlight of our involvement was the fabrication of the internal staircase. This feature demanded both structural precision and architectural finesse, delivering safe and robust access while complementing the building’s industrial heritage aesthetic.

Collaboration and Craftsmanship

Projects like this are never achieved in isolation. Working alongside KKE Architects Ltd , AR Miles Associates (structural engineers), and Guthrie Roberts Ltd , we ensured that our steel solutions aligned with the wider design vision. The result is a development that feels both modern and respectful of its origins — a key reason it has been honoured with a prestigious RIBA award .

Buying a Balcony? A Definitive History of The Balcony in the Home

The balcony is undoubtedly an essential and striking feature in the design of a home. As well as having the power to elevate a house from ordinary to impressive, they’re also featured in some of the most iconic scenes ingrained in our culture, from pop culture to politics. While the design of the balcony has changed and evolved over the years, they have remained a consistent feature in art and reality, serving as the backdrop to so many influential figures and memorable memories for many people.

While it’s tricky to trace the precise origins of balconies some of the earliest examples are thought to have featured in Ancient Greece within its architecture. At the time, it was likely they were more functional than a stylistic choice, with heavy stone buildings requiring an outlet through which air could circulate and natural light could enter.

Their function seems to have evolved and changed with the way of the world over the years. 19th-Century architect Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc posed that the modern-day balcony design derives from the medieval hourd – an anti-siege device that could be mounted onto a castle wall. Although their uses might now seem primaeval (often defenders of the castle took cover behind slate coverings and dropped rocks on the heads of intruders), hours were by and large totally ahead of their time. Designed to be simply assembled just before or sometimes even during battle, they were a feat of ingenuity and craftsmanship.

The timing of the balconies transition into a decorative adornment is a little unclear, but early examples seem to point towards the infamous Juliet balconies that were adopted by European architects during the 18th and 19th Centuries. While these initial balconies served a practical purpose similar to that of the Ancient Greek designs, they soon became a fashionable choice which were added to homes to make them appear grander and to appear elaborate. This effect was furthered during Britain’s Regency era when the falling cost of iron permitted craftsmen to make more elaborate designs.

Balcony Designs

Juliet Balcony

Juliet balconies seem to have continued popularity all throughout Europe, but one place they will not be found, surprisingly, is at Verona’s famous Casa di Guilietta – or Juliet’s Home. The house is a beautiful example of 14th Century architecture. The balcony design, however, dates from a slightly later time, as it wasn’t a feature of the original house. Once the house gained popularity amongst tourists, it was added to replicate the depictions in Romeo and Juliet.

Regardless of its namesake, Juliet’s Balcony would more aptly be labelled a French balcony, because of its small terrace space on which visitors can stand. Traditional Juliet balconies are reminiscent of false balconies in that they typically don’t include a platform for standing on.

A False Balcony

Juliet and false balconies may be quite similar, but there are a few marked differences that architects consider to be important. What’s more, differences are seen even between false balconies and faux balconies – two words typically seen as synonymous. While a false balcony is so named because there isn’t space to stand, there is still often a minute deck included, although not enough to impact the square footage of a house or apartment. Faux balconies, on the other hand, are made up from nothing but railing attached to a home exterior. French balconies are so named because of the French doors that typically precede it, making it perfect for rooms that need a little extra light.

Exterior balconies

With space for standing – or sitting or soliloquizing – are known as true balconies. These are often featured in European holiday homes, where spectacular views can be taken in from outdoor furniture, or summer cocktails can be shared over meals eaten al fresco.

Stacked or Pillared Balcony

Balconies of this kind are common in blocks of flats. These types of balconies take the form of a pillar outside the building, with all the balconies stacking up on one another. This type of structure puts less pressure on the structure itself.

True Balcony

This type of balcony does exactly what it says; it’s a useable space in the form of a jutting platform or deck. The size varies, but there should be the room and the strength to sit outside comfortably around a table or on a chair, as a minimum. These types of balconies adorn architecturally designed properties, holiday homes and hotels, and can extend your living space dramatically.

Loggia Balcony

Despite not technically a balcony, this feature still allows you to enjoy the outside while you are on an upper floor. It frequently has to have a roof and has a sturdy support structure.

Glass Railed Balcony

Rather than going for stainless railings, glass railings and balustrades offer an alternative that gives a feeling of space on your balcony.

Currently about a quarter of the world’s steel is produced by electric arc steelmaking. If scrap steel production methods are powered via renewable means, this can serve to lower the environmental impact even further.

Methods are also being developed to replace traditional fossil-based steel production methods with green hydrogen. This is a strategy which encourages a shift from the current take-make-waste model of manufacturing to a zero waste, more efficient and sustainable use of materials. It focuses on three key principles to achieve this:

Originally a phrase that originated out of the work of architect Walter R Stahel, the circular economy features a number of steps to tackle the growing problem of our finite resources and increasing demand for products. These include:

Prevention

Pioneering design and manufacturing methods that use less materials and creating products that are engineered to last. Switching to less hazardous manufacturing methods and product alternatives that pose less of a risk to health and the environment.

Preparing For Reuse

This involves checking, cleaning, repairing and refurbishing old items or parts for reintroduction into the product cycle.

Recycling

Turning waste and discarded materials into a new substance or product in order to save on the impact and costs associated with extracting new materials.

Although the addition of new raw materials may occasionally be necessary, the circular economy method helps to ensure that raw materials are not being used at a rate that exceeds them being replenished.

The current most widely used product economy is the ‘Linear Economy’. Unfortunately this is a wasteful method that depletes the earth's natural resources more quickly than we can replenish them.

Linear Economy

Many manufacturing methods currently in place focus on ‘take-make-dispose’ which results in a large amount of unwanted and often dangerous landfill waste. It puts pressure on a country’s plummeting resources as new raw materials need to be found out and utilised, often through further harmful extraction methods. The steps linear economy follows a similar process:

Extraction

Processes which involve the means of gathering raw materials, for example mining, logging operations, oil drilling etc. Currently, iron ore is mined from the ground as part of enormous open cast mining operations. Mining is one of the most damaging operations to surrounding environments and wildlife.

Production

The means by which raw materials are crafted into usable products, for example the process of turning trees into paper, ores into metals etc. Large industrial foundries smelt the iron ore in blast furnaces where impurities are removed. Often these methods require large amounts of energy to produce useful products.

Use

Products are purchased by consumers or manufacturers and either turned into other useful products or utilised for a specific purpose. For example steel could be bought by construction companies and used in buildings, infrastructure, ships, trains, cars and more.

End of Life

Once a product has reached the end of its perceived ‘usefulness’ and is at the end of its life cycle, in many manufacturing methods this means a product can no longer be used. Often products are disposed of by incineration or landfill, methods that require large amounts of energy or cause lasting damage to the surrounding environment.

Steel & the Circular Economy

After water, steel is the most recycled material on the planet. Research shows that 99% of structural steelwork is reused or recycled. Worldwide over 500 million tonnes of steel is recovered and recycled annually.

The construction industry in the UK consumes more than 420 metric tonnes of materials annually and generates around 90 metric tonnes of waste, of which 25 metric tonnes ends up in landfill.

The Steel Construction Institute (SCI) has estimated that there are around 100 million tonnes of steel in buildings and infrastructure in the UK. This steel ‘stock’ is an important and valuable material asset that will be reclaimed and either reused or recycled in the future.

The steel supply chain is a good example of a circular economic model in a microcosm. Steel as a material has many properties that facilitate easy recovery from waste, such as being magnetic, strong and durable. Properties which have allowed steel and ferrous metals to be easily recycled for a long time and the circular economic model of steel is already well established and efficient.

Only small amounts of iron and steel currently go to landfill. If it is recoverable, it can be recycled, in some areas, up to 98% of steel is recycled.

How Steel Recycling Works

The most widely recycled products include gold and steel, mainly due to their high value. Many methods have been widely used for decades to effectively sort and recycle metals. But how exactly does steel recycling work?

Sorting

Metals are first sorted into which materials are recyclable and which are non-recyclable. The quality of metal is important, as high quality recycled products can only be created if the original materials used in the recycling process are of good quality. Quality checking methods are therefore important during this process.

Processing

Once materials have been sorted, good quality, recyclable materials are compacted using machines to ensure efficient use of space. Metal is then cleaned to remove dirt and contaminants ready for the next stage.

Shredding

Metals are broken down into tiny pieces or sheets to allow further processing. Smaller pieces have a large surface area, requiring less energy compared to larger pieces. Steel is often converted into blocks while aluminium is converted into sheets.

Melting/Purification

A variety of purification techniques are used which vary depending on the metal. This is done to ensure the final product is free of impurities, which could dilute the effectiveness of the material. Electrolysis is a commonly used method of purifying some metals, whilst others use a powerful magnet.

Molten metal is then carried by the conveyor belt to a cooling chamber where they are cooled and solidified into solid metal that can be used again. Other chemicals are also added during this process to give the metal its density and other properties.

Many large steel companies currently already have methods in place to ensure the reprocessing of steel. 99% of steel from scrap cars is recycled and around 94% of steel is recycled when a building is demolished, according to a UK study.

Recycled steel is usually produced by electric arc furnaces (EAF) which tend to be much smaller and more efficient in their operation than blast furnaces, which are used to turn iron ore into material.

Blast furnaces are capable of producing up to 13,000 tonnes of steel each day. Converting raw iron oxides into melted steel can take anywhere from six to eight hours per batch. Electric furnaces produce 150 tonnes per batch, and batch production takes around 90 minutes. Although the yield is not as high as blast furnaces, electric arc furnaces are much cheaper to run and maintain than blast furnaces. As electric arc furnaces run on electricity, they have the advantage of being able to be generated via renewable means. This means that the entire steel recycling process has the means to be powered completely without the assistance of fossil fuels.

With the proposed steel production methods that use hydrogen instead of coal already looking promising, the future looks bright green for the steel industry. However, that goal still requires work to achieve, with many steel production companies and blast furnaces still relying on fossil fuels.

How Iron Railings are Made

Intricate, secure and lovingly crafted, wrought iron railings can be a fantastic addition to anyone’s home. Adding a certain old-world beauty to a property, it’s not unusual to see iron railings outside the front of classical buildings in the more affluent areas of the UK and around the world. Indeed, as wrought iron was so important to Great Britain during the industrial revolution, you can see examples of its craftsmanship up and down the country.

However, while they’re definitely a charming investment, iron railings in particular are becoming less common, with homeowners looking toward cheaper, less malleable options. While these alternatives can save you a few quid, they can never quite emulate the elegance of a beautifully crafted wrought iron railing.

The reason for this is that a surprising amount of work goes into the creation of a new railing and it takes a specialist in the field of metal fabrication to ensure that you receive a stunning finished project. With this in mind, we decided that we wanted to give our readers a more in-depth look into the process of how raw iron is refined and transformed into your new railings.

Where does iron come from?

Human civilisation has been using iron in one way or another for thousands of years. What is argued to be the earliest use of iron can be seen by the Egyptians, who used meteorites to create iron items in small amounts. The first record of iron being smelted was by the ancient Hittite culture who resided in what is now modern day Turkey. This innovation helped the Hittites gain substantial power in the region and kickstarted the beginnings of the iron age.

However, we don’t have to wait for a meteorite to strike in order to make the most of iron, as the material is the most abundant of all metals and makes up a significant amount of the earth’s crust.This element is so common, it is even an essential component when it comes to oxygenating our blood.

Found as iron ore, which is a mixture of pure iron and rocks, sand and clay, it is usually dug up through a process known as open-pit mining. By stripping back stratas of the earth, sometimes delving over a half a mile deep, miners use heavy machinery to access the veins of iron ore that are hidden beneath.

The refining process

Once the iron ore has been extracted from the ground, it will need to be refined from its natural form. This requires the ore to be crushed and then sorted into various grades.

The best grades of ore should contain at least 60% iron, while the lower grades require further refining methods collectively known as beneficiation. This will result in high-quality ore powder which can then be used.

The manufacturing process

After the iron has been refined and processed, the ore is blended together to then be inserted into a blast furnace. This tower-like structure is where the ore is melted down via multiple reactions. As the ore enters the top of the furnace, extremely hot air is blown into the bottom. This hot air reacts with a material known as coke, which burns in the presence of hot air, creating carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide then reacts with the ore finishing the process with pure iron.

The molten iron reaches the bottom of the furnace where it is combined with limestone. This pulls any excess rock or other impurities out of the iron and, due to the fact it is much lighter than the iron, then floats to the top of the molten mixture. The substance floating at the top is known as slag and is extracted leaving the iron, which is then cast into ingots known as ‘pigs’.

Wrought iron vs. cast iron

Although iron ore is the same when it’s extracted from the earth, there are a variety of ways it can be modified and mixed in order for it to be useful for a variety of different purposes. For example, steel is created when raw iron is alloyed with carbon, making it much stronger as a result. However, as we’re looking at the process of iron railing design, it’s important to understand why wrought iron is used.

It isn’t uncommon for the terms cast and wrought iron to be used interchangeably, however, this would be incorrect as the two types offer very different benefits. The word ‘wrought’ means to be worked upon and moulded, which is exactly what makes wrought iron so beneficial.

While cast iron is melted and left to cool in a mold, making it especially strong but highly brittle, wrought iron is heated in a forge and then fashioned into a desired shape, making it much more malleable than its cast iron counterparts.

While both types of iron have their strengths and weaknesses, wrought iron is especially useful when making the beautiful, intricate designs that go into creating a quality railing. The more times that wrought iron is shaped, the stronger it becomes and, thanks to its malleable nature and high tensile strength, it acts as the perfect material for something as intricate as a gate or railing.

Creating a wrought iron railing

When we use the term ‘wrought’ we mean it pretty literally when it comes to creating a new iron product. By consistently hitting and shaping the iron when hot, iron workers are effectively beating out the impurities in the iron, to the point that you can literally see the excess slag oozing out of the iron as it’s worked. It is this process that gives wrought iron its fibrous appearance and structure.

As it makes more sense to describe the process as crafting rather than manufacturing, wrought iron work takes much longer and requires the skills of a highly-trained blacksmith in order to create a great looking finished product. It’s for this reason that wrought iron products can be more expensive than other, less artistic options, however, you can be sure that upon enlisting the help of a specialist, you will receive a one of a kind investment at the end.

Wrought iron maintenance

Unfortunately, like all iron-based metals, your wrought iron railings and gates are susceptible to rust if not properly looked after and while it’ll last for longer than you’d think, proper maintenance is essential to keep your wrought iron gates and railings looking great.

For starters, regular cleaning can help to clear away any excess dirt and grime that can build up on the surface of your railing. This job is relatively easy, simply take a scrubbing brush, soap and warm water and gently clean away any irritating grime.

You’ll also at times need to re-touch the paintwork on your wrought iron railings, as this one of the main defences against rust. For the best results, use a rust-proofing primer on bare metal followed by at least two coats of enamel paint. For the more intricate components of your gate or railing, consider using spray

America’s Concrete Jungle: Three New York Films That Feature Fire Escapes

During the mid 19th century, New York was overcrowded and unequipped to deal with the industrialisation that was taking over the city and the growing population. Buildings were made cheaply making them fire traps, and as the number of fires increased, regulations were imposed that buildings that housed more than eight families needed and additional escape route - the fire escape was born.

But city dwellers reshaped the fire escape, they become makeshift climbing frames for kids, a place to dry washing and outdoor respite from the oppressive heat of city summers - continuing to be an iconic part of the landscape today. It may have gone straight over your head, but believe or not, many of the world’s most famous New York films have fire escapes at the centre of their most memorable scenes.

West Side Story

Also known as the Romeo and Juliet of the 1950s, West Side Story is a romantic tragedy musical that follows two New York gangs The Jets and The Sharks, as they battle for turf and two of the members from opposing gangs secretly fall in love. A Shakespearean twist in Downtown New York, the film makes the most of the city’s iconic architecture for many of it’s most intimate scenes, swapping Romeo and Juliet’s famous balcony for an urban, fire escape. The Rise of the ‘Little Giant’: Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Greatest Feats

It doesn’t take a huge amount of searching to come across a relic of the Victorian era. Whether it’s the miles of old railways snaking across the country or the great iron structures that stand stoically in our country’s cities, the Victorians truly left their mark on the UK.

However, one individual stands out as an iconic figure in Victorian design and engineering. Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s legacy remains as important as ever. Yet, who is the ‘Little Giant’ and what exactly did he achieve throughout his lifetime?

Early life

Born in Portsmouth on April 9th 1806, Brunel was already part of a family heavily involved in engineering. His French father Sir Marc Isambard Brunel was an engineer who had fled his home country during the revolution and became a key figure in various engineering projects both in the UK and New York City.

Educated in both England and France, Brunel learnt the principles of engineering from a young age and soon went on to study under the famous master clockmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet before returning to England.

The Thames Tunnel

Although Isambard’s father was the chief engineer on the project, the Thames Tunnel marked the Little Giant’s first foray into engineering upon returning home and he played a huge part in its construction. Although he was nearly swept away during a flooding incident and the project was hindered by lack of finances, the Thames Tunnel was finally opened 18 years after initial construction, it was hailed as the eighth wonder of the world.

In 1865, the tunnel was sold to the railways and would become a key component in the London Underground, a role that it still carries out to this day.

The Clifton Suspension Bridge

Arguably the most iconic structure in the city of Bristol, the Clifton Suspension Bridge is a truly magnificent display of Victorian ironworks and engineering.

Brunel was only 24 years old when he first laid out the plans for the bridge after winning a competition stipulated in the will of a wealthy benefactor, making this his first major commission. Work began on the bridge in 1831, however, soon after riots across the city made continuation of construction impossible due to a loss of investor confidence.

It was because of this that Brunel would sadly never see the completion of his iconic structure. However, the 19th century bridge designed to carry light horse-drawn traffic is still in use today. Suspended above the Avon Gorge by 81 wrought-iron rods, the bridge is a sight to behold.

SS Great Britain

Although the SS Great Britain wasn’t the first ship Brunel designed, it is arguably his most famous, setting a number of precedents in the field of marine engineering. When it was launched in 1843, the SS Great Britain was the largest ship in the world at 320 feet long.

However, it was also the first ocean-going iron ship, kick-starting a new age of oceanic travel. Carrying 252 passengers and 130 crew members, its first voyage across the Atlantic took only a mere 14 days, smashing records set by other similar ships.

Universal Beam

Universal beams, also known ad I-beams or H-beams, come in the shape of their namesake: an ‘I’ when standing upright, and a ‘H’ on their side. Universal beams are usually made of structural steel and are used in construction and civil engineering, among other industries.

Universal Column

Universal beams are also widely used for structural purposes. They are similar to beams and are often referred to as I-beams or H-beams, however, all three sections are the same in length. As their name suggests, they are mainly used for columns, and have a brilliant load-bearing capabilities.

Angled Sections

Angled structural steel sections can come as either equal or unequal. Both will be right angled, however, unequal sections have different sized axis’ making them L-shaped. This kind of section is much stronger (up to 20%) with a much higher strength to weight ratios. Angled sections are used in residential construction, infrastructure, mining and transport. Also, they are available in a wide range of lengths and sizes.

Circular Hollow Sections

Circular Hollow Sections come as a hollow tubular cross sections and have a much higher resistance to torsion that tapered flange beams. The density of the walls is uniform within the entire circle which makes this beams great for use with multi-axis loading processes.

Rectangular Hollow Sections

These types of structural steel are much like the circular hollow sections,however they have rectangular cross sections. They are very popular in many mechanical and construction steel applications. Their flat surfaces make them prime for use in joining and metal fabrication.

Square Hollow Sections

Like their hollow section counterparts (except with square cross sections), these are used within smaller applications such as columns or posts. However, they are unsuitable for beams as their shapes are inherently difficult to bolt into other types of shape. They are also known as ‘box sections’.

Flat Sections

Arguably the most versatile type of steel section as they require to be attached to another section. In some cases, they can be attached to another section as a strengthening tool. They are also often referred to as ‘plates’ (for example, checker plates).

What Is Damascus Steel?

If you have an interest in medieval history or like watching Hollywood movies, you might have heard the term ‘Damascus Steel’ and wondered what exactly it is.

In media, literature and entertainment, Damascus steel is referred to as a type of metal alloy that is used in weaponry and possesses impressive characteristics that were considered greater than common European steel at the time. The History Of Damascus Steel

Damascus metal blades were first created in the Near East from ingots of wootz steel, imported from the Indian subcontinent. Wootz steel is crucible steel that is characterised by a pattern of bands from bedsheets of microscopic carbides within a tempered martensite or pearlite matrix in carbon steel. Once the Arabs introduced this type of steel to the city of Damascus, a thriving and distinctive weapons industry soon began to thrive.

Damascus steel was characterised by its strength, resistance to shattering, and its ability to be sharpened to a great extent. As such its use in weaponry was highly prized throughout the known world as superior to its European equivalent, which has led to its fame today. Some of the legends that have arisen from swords crafted from Damascus steel include the ability to cut a strand of hair that falls across the blade.

The use of Damascus steel in swords gradually declined until the industry died by the 1750s. Historians have deduced that this happened because of the breaking down of the necessary trade routes or suppression by the British Raj.

Since this date, the methods and techniques employed to produce this steel have been forgotten to history. Nonetheless, there have been many attempts by craftsmen and scientists to reproduce the wonders of Damascus steel.

Understanding The Steelmaking Process

From stainless steel cutlery to strengthened steel beams that help to keep our buildings stable, steel is an essential component to a variety of aspects in our modern day lives. Yet, as important as it has been to human development, it is not a naturally occurring material and must undergo various procedures in order to create the finished product.

With this in mind, we at Underwood Steel have decided to take a closer look at how we create this vital material.

The problem with iron

As a naturally occurring material, iron has had its uses for thousands of years; it is also the primary component in making steel. When heated in a blast furnace, the cooled iron becomes extremely hard. However, the main issue with heated iron (pig iron) is that, due to its high level of impurities, it isn’t particularly very malleable - if you strike it with a hammer, it will most likely crack.

With this in mind, the steel making process is designed to remove the various impurities, such as the excess carbon, sulfur and phosphorous, from the iron in order to create a strong, yet malleable material; this is done through a couple of differing methods.

Open-hearth furnaces

Although most open-hearth furnaces were closed during the 1990s, it was the most common way of removing impurities from pig iron since its development by Carl Wilhelm Siemens and implementation for steelmaking by Pierre-Émile Martin in 1865.

The process works by heating pig iron, limestone and iron ore to an average temperature of 870 degrees C. This incredible heat floats the limestone and ore to the surface of the molten mixture forming a slag. At this point, impurities are oxidized and float out of the iron into the slag, leaving you with the finished steel.

The Bessemer process and basic oxygen steelmaking

One of the main issues with the open-hearth technique is that is extremely time-consuming. Because of this, new techniques were utilised in order to cut down production times. The technique known as the Bessemer process works by blowing air through the molten iron, thus removing impurities through oxidisation.

However, it wouldn’t be until the 1940s that a newly refined version of the Bessemer process would become the method to create steel on an industrial scale. Developed by Swiss engineer Robert Durrer, ‘basic oxygen steelmaking’ refines Bessemer’s converter due to the increased abundance of high tonnage pure oxygen. With oxygen now more cheaply available to oxidise the iron, factories were soon able to create the same amount of steel in under 40 minutes that take would an open-hearth furnace 10-12 hours to make.

Casting, forming and finishing

Once the impurities have been removed and steel has been created, it is poured into cooling moulds that help to solidify the molten steel quickly. Once it has sufficiently cooled, the steel is then cut into its desired lengths depending on its application.

The sections are then put through what is known as primary forming, which manipulates the metal into its initial shapes through the process of hot rolling. Finally, the metal goes through secondary forming techniques such as shaping, jointing and coating to leave you with a finished steel product.
