about this project

Underwood Fabrications were approached by Adventure Leisure Ltd. to manufacture & install two new double flight staircases to replace the existing decommissioned escalators at the new Mr Mulligans leisure facility in the centre of Worcester.

The project involved dismantling the old escalator mechanisms & running gear and removing for disposal. To avoid disruption to neighbouring retailers, it wasn’t practical to remove the entire escalator structural framework, therefore a design was established that could utilise the existing main lattice frames which were left in place to serve as base framework for the new staircases.

In order to comply with public access building regulations, the new stairs were required to be at a shallower angle than the original escalators and also needed to incorporate a mid “rest” landing. Ensuring sufficient head room was maintained was another critical design consideration.

Hot metal site permits were acquired before site-work could commence. New 200 x 10 flat stringers were shop fabricated and site welded to the existing lattice frames. 8.0mm thick folded tread plates and landing plates were then formed & installed onto the stringers. The 42mm tubular hand rails were manufactured and welded onto new offset posts and site welded in situ.

The contract timeframe was a tight four weeks with the added complication of the stairs being needed as the primary access route for other trades. Despite this, the stairs were completed and the main contractor applied the finishes in readiness for the facility’s opening day.
