Celebrates 50 Years: Celebrating Our Past. Building Our Future

September 23, 2026

2026 marks a significant milestone as Underwoods Steel Stockholders & Fabrications celebrates its 50th anniversary and embarks on an exciting new chapter in its history.

Established in 1976, Underwoods Steel Stockholders & Fabrications has spent five decades serving the construction, manufacturing and engineering industries, building a reputation for quality, reliability and expertise in steel stockholding and fabrication.

While 2026 marks 50 years of Underwoods Steel Stockholders & Fabrications, the Underwood family business story stretches back much further. With roots spanning more than 130 years, the business has evolved through several generations and many different iterations, continually adapting to changing industries, markets and opportunities.

Today, that story continues as the sixth generation of the Underwood family works alongside the fifth, combining experience and heritage with new ideas and ambitions for the next chapter of the family business.

While this anniversary gives us an opportunity to reflect on everything that has brought us to this point, it is equally an opportunity to look forward.

That's why we're marking this milestone with Future 50 – Celebrating Our Past. Building Our Future.

50 Years of Projects, Partnerships and Progress

Over the past 50 years, Underwoods Steel Stockholders & Fabrications has evolved considerably, adapting to changing markets, embracing new technologies and expanding our capabilities to meet the needs of our customers.

From supplying steel to local tradespeople and businesses to designing, manufacturing and installing bespoke architectural and structural steelwork, our work has contributed to projects across Worcestershire, Herefordshire and beyond.

Our fabrication portfolio includes everything from intricate architectural features and bespoke staircases to substantial structural steelwork for commercial and residential developments.

Among our recent achievements is our involvement in Worcester's Old Fire Station redevelopment, a project recognised with a RIBA West Midlands Award in 2025.

These projects demonstrate the breadth of our capabilities, the craftsmanship behind our work and the longstanding relationships we have developed across the industries we serve.

We are incredibly grateful to the employees, customers, suppliers and industry partners, past and present, who have each played a part in the Underwoods story.

Those relationships have helped shape our first 50 years and will continue to play an important role in what comes next.

A Significant Year of Change

Our 50th anniversary coincides with one of the most significant periods of transformation in the company's recent history.

Earlier this year, we completed the sale of The Steel Centre in Worcester, a site that has been at the heart of our steel business for almost 20 years.

It was not a decision taken lightly. The site holds countless memories for our family, employees and customers and has played an important role in the development of Underwoods Steel Stockholders & Fabrications.

However, the sale represents a strategic decision to reshape our operations and reinvest in areas of the business where we see significant opportunities for sustainable, long-term growth.

Change on this scale inevitably involves difficult decisions, but it also provides an opportunity to create a more focused and resilient business, equipped to respond to the evolving demands of the construction and steel industries.

For the fifth and sixth generations of the Underwood family, our responsibility is not simply to preserve what has gone before, but to ensure the business continues to evolve and has a strong foundation for the generations that follow.

Investing in the Future of Steel Fabrication

At the centre of our plans is a major reinvestment into Underwoods Fabrications.

We have ambitious plans to develop our capabilities, strengthen our position within the construction industry and establish our fabrication division as a leading regional partner for structural and architectural steelwork.

Our investment strategy focuses on five key areas:

Skills: Developing the specialist knowledge and expertise required to support increasingly complex fabrication projects.

Technology: Investing in new equipment, digital systems and improved production processes to enhance efficiency, accuracy and productivity.

Quality: Strengthening our quality management systems and working towards recognised industry standards and certifications.

Capability: Expanding our capacity to deliver increasingly complex structural and architectural steelwork, from initial design and detailing through to fabrication and installation.

Growth: Developing our brand, strengthening relationships with contractors, architects and structural engineers, and pursuing new opportunities across the construction industry.

Together, these investments are designed to create a more focused, technically capable and competitive fabrication business, while ensuring Underwoods continues to evolve in response to the needs of the industries we serve.

Building on More Than 130 Years of Family Heritage

The Underwood family business has never stood still.

Across more than 130 years, successive generations have had to adapt to changing markets, technologies and economic conditions. The business of today looks very different from the one our predecessors would have known, but the principles behind it remain familiar: a commitment to quality, good service, strong relationships and a willingness to evolve.

That responsibility now passes increasingly to the sixth generation, working alongside the fifth generation to shape what Underwoods will become next.

For us, protecting a family legacy isn't about keeping the business exactly as it has always been. It's about making the decisions and investments necessary to ensure it remains relevant, competitive and sustainable for the future.

Our 50th anniversary therefore represents both a milestone and a transition – a chance to recognise an important chapter in the Underwoods story while beginning to write the next one.

Future 50: The Next Chapter Starts Here

The 50th anniversary of Underwoods Steel Stockholders & Fabrications is much more than a celebration of the past.

It's an opportunity to recognise how far the business has come, acknowledge those who have contributed to its journey and, most importantly, set out our ambitions for what comes next.

Over the coming months, we'll be sharing more about our investment programme, developments within our fabrication division and the projects that demonstrate the growing capabilities of Underwoods.

We look forward to continuing to work alongside our customers, suppliers and industry partners as the fifth and sixth generations take the family business into its next chapter.

50 years isn't our finish line. It's our starting point.
